Physiotherapy, as defined by the World Confederation of Physical therapy ( WCPT), is services provided by physiotherapists to individuals and populations to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout the lifespan. The service is provided in circumstances where movement and function are threatened by ageing, injury, pain, diseases, disorders, conditions and/or environmental factors and with the understanding that functional movement is central to what it means to be healthy.

Physiotherapists use conservative methods to carry out treatment, as opposed to drugs or surgery. These may involve the use of heat, cold, sound waves, electricity, therapeutic exercises and other physical modalities. Physiotherapy treatment interventions are based on the findings of a comprehensive initial evaluation which is used to determine the problems that need to be addressed. Based on clinical findings and the use of clinical judgement, then a physiotherapy diagnosis, prognosis and plan can be developed.

The physical therapist’s extensive knowledge of the body and its movement needs and potential is central to determining strategies for diagnosis and intervention.
